A South San Francisco police officer was injured after a vehicle struck the officer's motorcycle in a Redwood City intersection on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The police officer, whose name was not released by authorities, was participating in a Saturated Traffic Enforcement Program when a motorist did not stop at a stop sign and struck the officer, South San Francisco police officials said in a statement on Facebook. Redwood City police officials reported at about 2:45 p.m. that a traffic crash occurred at Fifth Avenue and Bay Road, closing Bay Road from Fourth to Sixth avenues.
Police said the officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment on moderate injuries. The officer was in stable condition on Tuesday evening, police said.
The involved motorist sustained minor injuries, remained on the scene and was cooperating with the Police Department's investigation, police said. Authorities said that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this incident.
"We wish both the Officer and the other driver a quick and speedy recovery," South San Francisco police said.
The Saturated Traffic Enforcement Program is a collaborative program in which motorcycle officers with participating San Mateo County agencies respond each month to various cities to assist local authorities "with their complaint areas and enforce traffic violations," said South San Francisco Police Corporal Jesse Ledesma.
Ledesma said that police would release additional information at a later time.
